What are Soft Skills?

Soft skills are a mix of social skills, communication skills, people skills, and personality traits that are very helpful for success in one’s personal and professional life. Some specific soft skills examples include: time management, networking, teamwork, work ethic, creative thinking, and conflict resolution.

Why are soft skills important?

Before hiring, managers tend to look for people with exceptional soft skills because of their ability to work well in a team and enable others to be more successful in the workplace as well. Technical skills alone will not guarantee a job, as poor soft skills can cause improper attitudes and toxic relationships, leading to an unproductive and unsuccessful workplace.

Soft skills characterize individuals based on how they interact with their peers, based on aforementioned examples such as time management, work ethic, creative thinking, teamwork, and most importantly communication. In a study conducted by an assessment company Wonderlic, about 93% of employers have stated that these soft skills and interpersonal skills play a huge factor in the hiring process. However, in another study conducted by LinkedIn, around 59% employers were said to have struggles in searching for people with great soft skills. This highlights how one can separate themselves from others in their career. Demonstrating strong leadership, communication, interpersonal skills, and time management skills can help someone gain a significant advantage compared to people with only strong technical skills, as soft skills can provide the room for much higher growth and improvement.

Soft skills not only help someone in their professional life, but also in their personal life as well. Proper discipline, manners, kindness, and a humble personality will help to form form tight bonds with people in life. The saying “forgive all, forgive yourself” exemplifies this mindset. By understanding other people’s point of views, following proper etiquette such as arriving at meetings, be it professionally or personally related, and assessing the “room temperature” or the mood of the room before speaking can really help earn and maintain respect in various family and social circles.
