The Importance of Data Science

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that involves processing data to extract knowledge or insights in various forms, combining theories and techniques from other fields, such as information science, mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Data science is an extremely important function of any business because it helps leaders better understand their organization and their consumers, allowing them to make fact-based decisions to improve their company.
Data science has applications in a wide array of fields, including banking and finance, automotive, energy, healthcare, retail, and virtually every industry you can think of. Data scientists have become increasingly important in recent years and are in very high demand. Universities have been increasing the number of masters in data engineering and data analytics, as more and more employers are seeking to hire data scientists for their companies.
Here at Harmony Plus, we focus on empowering students through education. We believe in the great importance of data science, and want to ensure that students have the opportunity to gain valuable data science skills at a young age. This summer, we are hosting a Data Strategy Summer Research Program, where 20 brilliant students from 8–12th grade are working directly with renowned UC Berkeley Professor Gregory LaBlanc to learn the basics of data science.
We kicked off our program on June 19, and over the next five weeks, these students will learn about descriptive and prescriptive analytics, linear and logistic regression, visual model evaluation, machine learning algorithms and more. In the first class this past Friday, Professor LaBlanc went over the importance of data science, examples of data usage to help business to grow, and the misuse of data. Furthermore, by the end of this program, students will use their new data analytics skills to complete in-depth research projects on topics of their choosing.
