Please welcome Kevin Zhao, a third year student at UC Santa Cruz studying Psychology. Kevin already possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Material Science from Northeastern University at Qinhuangdao. However, Kevin has always held a deep passion for psychology and education; hence, why he decided to intern with Harmony Plus. In fact, upon learning of his internship acceptance with Harmony Plus, he immediately offered to support any student emotionally struggling as a result of this pandemic.

Despite being a self-proclaimed introvert, Kevin has already proven to be a resilient and motivated individual by going beyond his comfort zone. For the past two years, Kevin served as a copywriter in Shanghai, China. His accomplishments range from creating promotional materials that was published in the Journal of Fudan University, to presenting proposals to Porsche and other enterprises. Yet along the way, Kevin became an emboldened mental health advocate.

Today, Kevin is taking action in the mental health field. Kevin believes there’s a strong relationship between education and psychology. Moreover, he believes that all students deserve access to mental health services and need emotional support to succeed in school. However, Kevin’s interest in psychology goes beyond curiosity in the classroom. His interest in mental health stems from his own personal experiences.

“One of my family members has a mental illness, so I want to study psychology and know how the mind can be affected and changed.”

For Kevin, an internship with Harmony Plus meant more than an opportunity to understand the education field. He saw the opportunity to help students succeed through personal and academic experiences. More importantly, he hopes these experiences will better prepare him for a career in education as a teacher.

“Harmony Plus can provide an experience for me in communicating with students and parents. [Joining this organization] will also help me to understand how to work and adapt in the education field.”

When asked how he wants to be remembered in Harmony Plus, he hopes many of his colleagues would see him as a kind and responsible individual by the end of his internship. Kevin has already fulfilled these traits through taking initiative in our reading & writing programs. For example, Kevin has been helping elementary school students learn English and was even given the opportunity to teach a lecture.

We are extremely grateful to have Kevin join our team and look forward to seeing how he’ll support our students!
