A new year means new beginnings, new chances, new opportunities for growth…and new spring classes at Harmony Plus! Prepare your child for their 2021 spring semester and beyond with a wide variety of online writing classes available for all grades:

Analytical Writing

Help your child grow their writing skills while honing useful interview and presentation skills through analytical writing! Created for middle and high school students, this class is perfect for any student preparing for high school or college (or even future job!) applications. Here, students practice advanced annotations and reading strategies to understand, analyze, and synthesize causes and effects on issues that impact their communities. Students write multiple drafts for two analytical essays that explore the causes and effects of the issue they care about, as they learn advanced grammar and writing techniques that align with SAT standards. But if learning these advanced writing skills isn’t enough, students also work on their formal presentation skills, creating professional pitch decks, holding interviews, and giving elevator pitches. Taught by Mr. Glen, a talented teacher with more than 10 years of experience in teaching students writing and one who has guided students with their college essay writing to Harvard, Stanford, and Cornell, your student is sure to benefit from the effects of this cause! (see what we did there?). This class is held throughout 12 sessions, Thursdays from 3:30–5 pm.

Creative Writing

Spark your child’s interest in reading and writing through creative writing! Designed for 4–6th graders, this course improves creative writing skills, specifically in crafting prose fiction short stories. Though creative writing can be overlooked, it provides a multitude of skills: Reading and writing fiction helps to strengthen perspective, understanding, and connection — all crucial skills for reading research papers or writing analytical pieces. Over the course of 9 sessions, students create three short stories with strong voices, complex characters, and clear structure. Using a multi-model approach, this interactive online course provides prompt feedback to parents and students. Start your little writer on their path to success early with a large selection of classes and times: 3:30–5 pm/6–7:30 pm PST Monday through Friday (once a week) or 10–11:30 am/1:30–3 pm PST on Saturdays.

Non-Fiction Reading and Writing

This is one course you don’t want to miss. With a proven record of enhancing students’ nonfiction reading and writing skills in narrative, informational, and persuasive styles of writing, this non-fiction reading and writing course will prepare your student for all their educational endeavors. There are two levels for this course: one for 4–6th grade and the other for 7–8th grade.

  • 4th-6th Grade: It’s never too early to start your child on their successful writing path. Throughout 9 sessions, students craft 3 core writing samples under the instruction of a professional writing instructor with 5+ years of teaching experience. This highly interactive course allows students to work collaboratively on their writing pieces with other students and the teacher, giving them teamwork and leadership skills in addition to writing. Sessions are available: 3:30–5 pm/6–7:30 pm PST Monday through Friday (once a week) or 10–11:30 am/1:30–3 pm PST on Saturdays.
  • 7–8th Grade: Similar to the younger level, this 9-session class continues to help develop students’ interest in reading nonfiction texts and expand their knowledge in science, culture, and history. Through creating 3 core writing samples in a variety of styles, students grow their non-fiction reading and writing skills for narrative, informational and persuasive styles of writing. Plus, each week the student will revise and add new elements into their writing pieces, growing their portfolio. Sessions are available: 3:30–5 pm/6–7:30 pm Monday through Friday (once a week) or 10–11:30 am/1:30–3 pm on Saturdays.

Playwriting

Even Shakespeare had to start somewhere. In this course, students improve their reading and writing skills as they learn the basic building blocks of creating a play: plot, character, thought, diction, melody, and spectacle. As students read and analyze the work of contemporary and classic playwrights, they also learn about literary and dramatic traditions. Students write drafts of a ten-minute play (approximately ten-pages) while learning how to give and receive constructive feedback in a workshop setting. Plus, their play can be submitted to competitions, festivals, or productions! Designed for 4–6th graders, this course takes place over 9 sessions: 3:30–5 pm/6–7:30 pm PST Monday through Friday (once a week) or 10–11:30 am/1:30–3 pm PST on Saturdays.

Research Writing

Got a child passionate about a particular topic like climate change? Then let them explore civic issues through journalism with this course! With a proven record of boosting students reading and writing proficiency levels in non-fiction standardized English, this course is perfect for any student. Over 9 sessions, students are focused on conducting observations, surveys for qualitative research, and writing publishable op-eds about issues in the community. Students also improve their understanding of key world/community issues and topics to prepare them for global citizenship, a highly desirable quality for school and college applications. Sessions are available: 3:30–5 pm/6–7:30 pm PST Monday through Friday (once a week) or 10–11:30 am/1:30–3 pm PST on Saturdays.
